Amateur Radio Plate

The Amateur Radio Operator (ARO) plate will be inscribed with the official amateur radio call letters of such vehicle owner or lessee, as assigned by the Federal Communications Commission.

To qualify you must:

  • The vehicle owner or lessee must hold an unrevoked and unexpired official amateur radio station license issued by the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Be a Kansas resident or a member of the military who is not a Kansas resident and is stationed at a Kansas military base or office.
  • If the vehicle is owned, a Kansas title with the name of the amateur radio station licensee listed as an owner. If the vehicle is leased, the name of the amateur radio station licensee must be shown on the Kansas title as a lessee or the lease agreement must list this person’s name as a lessee.
  • ARO plates can be issued to autos and trucks registered for 20,000 lbs. or less.

Steps to obtain the plate:

  • Application must be made in your local county treasurer’s motor vehicle office.
  • Present to the county’s motor vehicle staff the unrevoked, unexpired amateur radio license issued by the Federal Communication Commission.
  • Proof of valid insurance must be present at the time of application.

Fee for the Amatuer Radio Operator plate

  • There is an additional $1.00 fee payable upon the initial application for the ARO plate. All regular registration fees and property taxes will also be due at the time of application.
